The journalist Will Hodgkinson is calling for a return to chivalry, arguing that the feminist consignment of chivalry to the patriarchal rubbish dump has provided men with an excuse to be lazy, selfish and impolite. But where did the idea of chivalry come from? Jenni hears from Medievalist Sarah Salih from King鈥檚 College, London, about the historical origins of the idea. How was a medieval code of conduct governing horsemanship transformed, in the Victorian age, into a rationale for men to open doors for the fairer sex? To what extent does male chivalry imply respect for women? And are there any grounds for bringing it back? |
