Sylvia Townsend Warner was one of the most popular writers of the 1930’s. Her novels were best sellers, yet today she is virtually unknown. She was also a poet of some stature and a political activist – she joined the Communist Party in 1935. For many years she lived with another writer – the poet Valentine Ackland – together they published a volume of their work, but without great success.
