I've got a younger brother, Les, and my Mum really liked two of his ex-girlfriends. The first one, Carol, used to come and visit trying to pick the times when Les wasn't going to be at home. Mum and Dad actually went to the evening do on the occasion of her wedding.
The second was Janet. She and Mum were friends up to my mother's recent death. In fact sometimes, Janet, her Mum, and my sister and my Mum used to go out for a meal together. Janet has three children and often attended the weekly Parent and Toddlers group my Mum used to help with. My brother has been married to Karen for about thirteen years. So, Mum's friendships stood the test of time. The other interesting thing is that all three girls knew each other, went to the same school and were in the same class.
Les got used to the friendships. So, as you see, it can work!
