Does Hank Williams deserve the title Godfather of country music?

"The thing about Hank Williams is not only did he make great records but the songs were great and can be performed by so many people. In "Cold, Cold Heart", as with so many others he is answering the question of Robert De Niro: He is talking to you and it鈥檚 a strict one-on-one experience. And he starts singing and you just listen. He's got no fat in his lyrics. Goes straight to the point, and musically in "Cold, Cold Heart" there鈥檚 such a swing of the lines and a glide in the notes that everything seems to follow its predecessor automatically, it鈥檚 almost as if the song just existed and was discovered like an element in the periodic table. And that was the songwriting skill of Hank Williams."

John, Oxford Another beautiful version is that of Dinah Washington. Unlike the Norah Jones version - which, I am sorry, for me is far too sugary and 'clever' and 'artistic' and not country music at all and simply kills the song, the one by Washington is gorgeously restrained and at the same time hugely emotional. She could sing blues, country and cabaret better than almost any other female singer could sing either of those alone.
