When Northern Ireland people head off to live in other countries it's not just their personal belongings they take with them. They use familiar placenames when they get there to remind them of home.

In Clover, South Carolina you will find the LARNE BUILDING. This building is used for community events and is so called because Clover is twinned with Larne.

Doing the 'Ulster Walk' - Aussie style!

The 'Ulster Walk' caught on camera in Brisbane

A few years ago I was in Brisbane, Australia on a short visit. On a hot February afternoon, I was walking close to my hotel and stopped in my tracks when I saw a shop (or groups of shops) under the name Ulster Walk.

Can anyone tell me about this Ulster Walk?

P.S. There is a shop in Colchester (I think) called The Belfast.

A happy snapper took the photograph below while travelling through the Catlins area of South Island, New Zealand. He forgot to make a note of where exactly he took it and we put out a call for help.

"I have found听some details on the听elusive 'Carrickfergus St'. It's a sign post in Waikawa听a small fishing village in the southern part of the听South Island. I also found out that there are a few other streets with Irish names听Larne St... Antrim St all in Waikawa听听pronounced 听Why- ca- wa.

Waikawa's early settlers came from Ireland, England and Europe they听worked in the Goldmines, Sawmills and on the Whaling boats. I am still trying to find out who had the honour of naming the Streets. I am sure it was a well established Irishman by all accounts."

Have you any idea how these Waikawa streets came by their Irish names? Are there people with Northern Irish roots living in the area? If you know, we'd love to hear from you.
