Busy with preparing an article for your place and mine about Limavady, I nipped along last April to watch the Limavady Town Partnership's open air pageant in the Main Street of the town. This depicted the discovery and writing down of the Londonderry Air in 1851.

The street was closed off for the event and included Shire Horses, Costumed "market goers", Singers, and a skilful Irish Dancer. For it is not easy to dance to such a slow tune as the Londonderry Air

A Distant relative

Then "Blind Jimmy McCurry" arrived to take his place, resting on the shafts of the cart. He was accompanied by a young lady who was much nearer to the tale than most of the actors taking part, for she was teenager Nicole McCurry a distant relative of the the real Jimmy McCurry.

"Jimmy" struck up the music and started to play the immortal tune on his fiddle. On hearing that sound, the window was thrown open of the very house where the original Jane Ross lived, and the lady appeared once more, to be captivated by the music and later emerge to write it down in her ledger.

The pageant was great fun and well attended with spectators nine or so deep around the performance.

And one of those spectators had come a long way to watch the proceedings. Philip Weatherly, is grand nephew of Fred Weatherly, the man who penned the words Danny Boy. Philip had flown over from England especially to witness the event.

How wonderful to find this! I too am a distant relative of Jimmy McCurry's, now living in the western US. Is there, by any chance, a photograph of Jimmy in existance? I've never seen one but would be delighted if I could. An emailed version is fine.
