Names like the Dambusters, the Lancaster Bomber and 617
Squadron evoke many memories of heroic wartime Britain, and
these names are tied indelibly to Lincolnshire. In fact, the
Battle of Britain memorial flight is still led by a Lancaster
named The City of Lincoln.
Before World War Two though, Lincolnshire wasn鈥檛 the 鈥楻AF county'
it became. Only nine of the 46 operational airfields that played
an important role in the war were built before 1939. RAF Scampton,
home to the famous Dambusters, was one of the few airfields
which started life during World War One. It was reactivated
in 1936 to become the home of 617 Squadron, who were known as
Squadron X when they were formed. Although we know of their
heroics now, little was known about them at the time of their
missions. Even those from other squadrons at Scampton only became
aware of the Dambusters raid after the event."
