More members of the clergy could be patrolling Leicester city centre at night to tackle yobbish behaviour. Volunteer members of the street pastors scheme monitor areas around clubs and bars. They aim to help anyone whose night out has gone wrong. The scheme has been set up by Churches Together, which is made up of 14 churches in Leicester's city centre.
It is hoped the project, which started in April, can now be expanded. And more volunteers are set to be recruited in September. The team of pastors is made up of members of the clergy as well people from ordinary walks of life. Volunteers wear fluorescent jackets and baseball caps to make sure they are noticed. Pastors also work in pairs and have mobiles phones so they can stay in contact. |
