Adjectives of nationality in French agree with the noun they qualify.

For most adjectives of nationality, you create the feminine form by sounding the last consonant of the masculine form. In written French, this is indicated by an e at the end of the word.

eg: je suis anglais (man), je suis anglaise (woman)

Note that:

  • the ending is -nne in the feminine for the following nationalities:
je suis italien (man), je suis italienne (woman)
je suis algérien (man), je suis algérienne (woman)

  • adjectives of nationality are written without a capital, whereas nouns (ie. a Frenchman, a Frenchwoman, an Italian) have the same form but are written with a capital letter.
eg: Sylvie Clément est une Française de Londres.
