The service has been running since December and without being publicised has already provided 4,500 free condoms.

To benefit from the scheme you have to enrol, which includes a demonstration on how to use them properly and advice on sexual health.

Some people may be too embarrassed to buy condoms

Once enrolled you鈥檒l receive an anonymous 鈥楥 card鈥� which will enable you to collect condoms from any of the Jersey鈥檚 sexual health services.

鈥淥nce you鈥檝e got this card it鈥檚 kind of a free ticket to access anywhere that鈥檚 convenient for you to get free condoms,鈥� explained the island鈥檚 sexual health promotion officer Aimie Tonsberg.

She said research shows that free condom and education schemes reduce sexually transmitted infections, and in some cases promiscuity.

鈥淚t stops people having sex a lot of the time,鈥� she said, 鈥渋t actually prevents young people from engaging in sex because they鈥檙e more aware of the risks.

De-stigmatise and normalise

The Health Promotion Unit hopes the initiative will help anyone who is too embarrassed to buy condoms over the counter.

鈥淲hat we鈥檙e trying to do is de-stigmatise sexual health services and trying to normalise them,鈥� explained Aimie.
