Chris de Glanville, onboard the Jersey Clipper, has told of the crew's delight in seeing land at the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. He's just sent this report.

'At midday today, exactly 21 days after we left Cascais, we sighted the islands of Anguilla and St Martin at the northern end of the Leeward islands. This caused great excitement amongst the crew as it confirmed that we have now all crossed our first ocean, and even though there are over a thousand miles to run till we reach Havana, it was a welcome sight indeed.

The realisation that your little boat can and has made the passage of such distance in such a big sea gives a strong feeling of both achievement and satisfaction.

Later today we passed very close to these islands as we made our best course up towards the Old Bermuda Channel and then on to Havana. Suddenly, we can hear radio messages again from other shipping in the area, and have sighted some yachts heading for the British Virgin Island cruising areas. There are now plenty of birds around, another welcome sight. The skipper resisted the suggestion of some of the crew that we should call in at Anguilla to a beach bar for a couple of rum punches to welcome us to the Caribbean!

The weather has got progressively hotter and more humid over the past few days, and it is now very unwinter like. The fans in the cabins are working furiously to keep us cool, but it is little respite during the middle of the day. Still, we could be in all the rain and cold in UK I suppose......sigh!

It will get very interesting this next week race wise. We are now very close to a lot of the fleet, and have designs on pulling up a position or two. Next stop Havana!'
