Clipper at sea

So here we are again, 4 days out of Cascais, and have been sailing into the teeth of a SW 7 for the last 24 hrs. This has preceded a period of light airs.

The SW wind gives us 2 problems - we may have to tack to avoid bumping into Africa, and also we have to deal with life on board at 30 plus degrees angle!

At first we welcomed a bit of a blow after the listlessness of the light airs, but right now we would all welcome the chance to stand on a flat surface.

Every movement becomes a major operation, both above and below decks. Just getting dressed takes 10 minutes!

Cooking is restricted to the very simplest of meals - just energy and protein stuff - and this is the first time I have written an email lying horizontally across the nav station, so please excuse this diary's brevity this time!

Today 'Stokes' Baird and I were on Mother Watch, i.e. doing all the cleaning and cooking. We are called "Dad's Army" by the rest of the crew, so we duly lived up to the name by serving up some corned beef sarnies for lunch!

However, our reward for these efforts is a full 12 hours off at the end of it plus a shower! So things can't be all that bad.

The rough seas have brought a renewed bout of sickness for Val, Benny and Silvia, but they are all being very brave about it, and we're sure they'll be fine once we get through this bit of weather.

At the moment, as I sit here below and hear the shouts of protest from the cockpit every time a new wave shower drenches the 'on' watch, Cuba seems so far away, but by the time you read this, we hope to be out of sailing to windward and into those trade winds.

Here's hoping!!!
