7. Love cools suddenly
I鈥檓 sorry that I haven鈥檛 been speaking to you for a while. I was busy. I began that project, to build a rocket. Don鈥檛 be laughing. It can be done; it鈥檚 possible to build a spaceship. It鈥檚 not that difficult. The information is available. The material can be got. There鈥檚 nothing to it except preparation and taking everything easy. Castles are built by degrees they say (Rome wasn鈥檛 built in a day).
And the Normans and others built castles and isn鈥檛 the world full of castles? There are great castles to be seen every where in the world. People built those castles with their own hands. People built the Great Wall of China and they built bridges and they built railways and they built big long roads 鈥 and they built castles鈥 by degrees.
Well, I am building a rocket 鈥 by degrees. That鈥檚 why I haven鈥檛 been speaking to you for a little while. I had other things on my mind. I am sorry about that. I didn鈥檛 mean to be rude. I am friendly with everyone who listens to me on this site. I appreciate your company. But I was busy with other things. Other things? Yes, I was busy with other things.
Affairs of the heart. Yes, even a scientist has a heart. Me and my beloved. Hmm鈥 Everything is not settled between us at the minute. I am devoted to her. I thought she was devoted to me. She was, without a doubt, she was devoted to me. She is devoted to me still. I am certain she is. We have been going out for a long time now. I met her when we were at university. She was my beloved. She is my beloved. She told me that I was spending too much time discussing environmental matters. She told me recently that I was too serious. Too serious! This is a serious business, I told her. She shook her shoulders. 鈥淏ut you are always talking about this鈥 she said. 鈥淵our attention is on nothing only this鈥.
What she said startled me. I wasn鈥檛 expecting it. Her words hurt me. 鈥淲ell what do you want to do?鈥 I asked her. 鈥淚 want to go out. I want to go out for dinner. I want to go out dancing. I want to go out to the cinema. I want to do anything else except discuss this spaceship鈥.
She threw the book she was reading on the floor and she left. I called after her but she didn鈥檛 listen to me. She hasn鈥檛 answered her phone since. Everything will be alright.
I am sure everything will be alright. Love cools suddenly. But not in this case. Everything will be alright. I am certain everything will be alright. Perhaps I was too serious. But this is a serious business!
And the work itself? Well, the work is going well. I have collected a lot of pieces. I am building away. I am learning. The spaceship isn鈥檛 ready yet but it is coming along well. Things look better than they did before. I didn鈥檛 lose my nerve. I am not depressed about things. Castles are built by degrees. I will be talking to you soon. I will be talking to you tomorrow night. I swear to God I will be talking to you tomorrow night.
