Near Uckfield was the Maresfield Army Camp we sometimes provided accommodation for the wives of soldiers waiting for embarkation. One day when one of these wives was staying with me, the Germans dropped a Molotov Basket trying to hit the railway which transported troops from Shorn Cliff, Kent to Newhaven. It missed the railway but damaged shops and houses. We went to help an elderly couple put out a fire in their bedroom, when we returned home our garden was ablaze, this had to be put out quickly as they gave light for the German bombers which followed.

In 1943-1944 Uckfield was invaded by doodle bugs and we had to evacuate. I went with my four children, Patrick, Kathleen, Peter and Anthony to stay in Oldham with one of the soldiers wives I had accommodated earlier in the war.

I have remained friends with some of families that stayed with me until the present day.
