In the days before trains, M-roads and Heavy Goods Vehicles, the waterways of England were king when it came to freight transport.Ìý Over the years, its usage has changed from transportation to more leisurely activities, but still holds a great fascination for many.

You can take a look at how the canals have changed over the centuries, and discover some of the characters involved with them by heading along to the Little Baddow History Centre before the end of September. On display will be Sir Alastair Stewart’s collection of rare books, photographs, prints, maps and memorabilia of England’s canals and inland waterways, covering the period from 1760 to Âtoday.ÌýÌý

It will specifically feature the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, which opened in 1797 at the height of the ‘Canal Age’, and will be complemented by a display by the Chelmer Canal Trust. The exhibition is open every Monday and Thursday between 10am and 12pm, Sundays between 2 and 4pm, and selected Saturdays. |
