Shadows of the Great War The Essex Regiment Museum in Chelmsford is presenting an exhibition of archives, poetry and artwork from the First World War.

|  | The exhibition features the work of Captain Hugh Salvin Calverley MC and Bar (1894-1971), who served with the 1/5th Essex at Gallipoli and Palestine, and later on the Western Front during the First World War.

During his service in Palestine he was wounded and when he returned to his home in Canada his experiences resulted in severe mental illness. In his later years he took up painting and poetry which helped to ease his condition, and it's some his work from this time that will be pat of the display at the museum in Oaklands Park.

On display will be a selection of items and works that according to the museum will 'reflect the military, the social and the artistic, conveying the spirit of the young men on whom the war left an indelible mark'.
