Complaint
A viewer complained that Chris Packham鈥檚 statement in this programme that 鈥渦ltimately investment in renewables provides us with cheaper energy and the energy security that we require鈥 was inaccurate and misleading. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 91福利社鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
Mr Packham鈥檚 statement was part of his response to the argument of another guest, Susanna Reid, that environmental policies aimed at mitigating climate change would be 鈥渁 hard sell鈥 to voters preoccupied with the cost of living, immigration and the future of the NHS unless they could be shown to save them money. The ECU recognised that both the relative cost of renewable energy and the level of security it could provide were debatable, but considered viewers in general would have understood Mr Packham to be putting forward an opinion about the ultimate benefits of investment in renewable energy rather than stating uncontested facts.
