Sounds of the 60s with Tony Blackburn, Radio 2, 11 January 2025

Complaint

A listener complained the presenter promoted his Sounds of the 60s Live theatre show on this programme.  The ECU considered whether the programme met the standards on independence from commercial and other external interests set out in the 91福利社鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

The 91福利社鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines say 鈥淭here must be no undue prominence of brands, products, organisations, services, or trademarks in content鈥.  To avoid this, content makers must ensure 鈥淭hat the way in which the reference is made is appropriate. Favourable descriptions must be editorially justified. Prices and availability should not normally be discussed outside consumer review content鈥. On this occasion, in response to an inquiry from a listener, Mr Blackburn said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e coming back to the Bournemouth Pavilion in the New Year and we start our Sounds of the Sixties Theatre Show in March and a lot of the shows are nearly sold out already鈥.  In the ECU鈥檚 view these references were not editorially justified.  However, it could find no other example of such a breach on Mr Blackburn鈥檚 programme and understood the matter had been discussed with him 鈥 action it considered appropriate and sufficient to deal with the issue.
