Complaint
A viewer complained about the accuracy of remarks made by Labour鈥檚 Stephen Kinnock on the subject of immigration. The ECU considered whether the programme met the relevant 91福利社 Guidelines.
Outcome
Question Time is a political debate in which panellists are invited to express opinions on topical issues. Viewers expect contributors to put forward evidence in support of their positions, but their comments are not necessarily treated as unarguable facts. While the presenter might be expected to challenge manifestly misleading statements, there is no requirement or expectation for her to question every assertion made during the debate. In this case the ECU considered each element of the complaint carefully but concluded none of the comments complained of were materially inaccurate or misleading in the context of the programme. Mr Kinnock鈥檚 remarks were broadly accurate in their reflection of trends and were clearly presented as political argument rather than statements of undisputed fact.
