Complaint

This edition featured a discussion about developments in the detection of prostate cancer.  A viewer complained about the absence of male representation on the panel discussing a health issue which affects only biological males.  The ECU considered whether the programme met the relevant 91福利社 Guidelines on impartiality.

Outcome

The programme reported on the start of a major screening trial designed to find the most effective way to detect prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men.  The studio discussion featured Laura Kerby, Chief Executive of Prostate Cancer UK, and the footballer Ella Toone, who spoke about losing her father to prostate cancer in 2024.  It followed a report from the 91福利社鈥檚 Medical Editor, Fergus Walsh, which included contributions from three men.  In the ECU鈥檚 view it was reasonable to judge the coverage in its entirety when assessing whether the programme reflected an appropriate range of views.  Mr Walsh鈥檚 report was an integral part of the item and ensured the impact on men and the experiences of those affected were appropriately represented.   The ECU further noted that representation did not rest solely on the sex of contributors and must take account of their role, experience, knowledge and connection to the issue.
