Abolition

Actors record Rebel Woman
The play tells the story of Queen Nanny

Out of Many, One People

Out of Many, One People is a multi-media project by 91¸£ÀûÉç Bristol designed to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade act.

It's an audio-visual installation and a radio play.

The play ‘Rebel Woman’, is a specially-commissioned drama based around the true story of Queen Nanny and the Maroons (the name given to runaway slaves).Ìý

Queen Nanny was an 18th Century warrior who escaped from slavery in Jamaica and inspired hundreds of slaves to flee and join her fight for freedom against the British.

Accompanying the play is an audio-visual installation: photographs and interviews with manyÌýUK-based Afro-Caribbeans directly descended from Maroons.

They feel their ancestors' resistance against slavery and ultimately winning their freedom from the British is something that needs to be celebrated.
