Female Style in RnB 1940-2005

Tina Turner 1960s to present day

Tina Turner 1960s/70s

She might have started the 60s with the formal style of previous decades but Tina was always a free spirit whose image was led by her raw, belting voice.
The advent of the mini-skirt (mid 60s) may have been avoided by The Supremes in performance, but Tina used it as a weapon of freedom...and is still doing so today, 40 years later.
The Ike & Tina live show was renowned for being one of the raunchiest and Tina's manes of hair were also part of her trade-mark. She was one of the first black women sport blonde hair.
Her expression on stage and in her fashion style belied the abuse she was suffering from Ike who had sever alcohol and cocaine problems. She attempted suicide in '68, but stayed with Ike through the early 70s.
All-in-one catsuits, animal prints, revealing costumes with tassles and sequins became her look of the 70s until her divorce in '76 when she disappeared for a while.
Since her revival in the 80s as one of the world's biggest solo artists, the beloved Tina has kept the legs out with short hemlines, the hair big and the energy wild, and shows no signs of slowing down.
